The Thailand Women’s T20 Smash got underway on Saturday with ten teams from across Asia competing in a major international cricket competition being staged in Bangkok. For the next five days the group stages are being held with five teams in each group playing four matches apiece.
Thailand are the highest rated team in the competition according to the new ICC rankings and the hosts started well by bowling out Myanmar for 45 with seven bowlers sharing the wickets before Nattakan Chantham and Naruemol Chaiwai saw them to a convincing 10-wicket victory. The other match in Group B saw Indonesia beat Hong Kong by seven wickets and the team from the East Asia Pacific region could provide Thailand with some stiff opposition.
UAE are another strong team who reached the ICC Women’s World T20 Qualifier alongside Thailand and they were far too good for Thailand A in their Group A match as UAE won by 60 runs. Nepal were impressive winners over China in the day’s other match as they won by ten wickets, so the signs are good for a highly competitive tournament.
All the matches except for those involving Thailand A are now recognized as official T20 Internationals so teams can improve their rankings with every victory in the lead up to the ICC Women’s World Cup Asian Qualifier which is being held in Bangkok next month.
