THAILAND TO TAKE PART IN THE ICC MEN’S T20 WORLD CUP ASIA QUALIFIER IN QATAR
The qualification process for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka is in full swing and it is the turn of the Asia Sub-Regional Qualifier B to take center stage as seven nations from across Asia will take part in the qualifying tournament held in Doha in Qatar from November 19 to 28.
The competition looks set to be an exciting one with Thailand joining hosts Qatar, Bahrain, Bhutan, Cambodia, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates as they compete for the last two places available in the Asia-East Asia-Pacific Regional Final to be held in Malaysia in August 2025.
Malaysia and Kuwait qualified from the Asia A Qualifier that was held in Malaysia, Samoa won the East Asia-Pacific A Qualifier and Japan won the East Asia-Pacific B Qualifier, while Nepal, Oman and Papua New Guinea had already qualified by virtue of taking part in the 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies.
The last two places for the final stage of Asia-EAP qualification will come from this Asia B Qualifier with the seven teams playing in a round robin league with the top two teams in the table being rewarded with places in the next qualifier.
Thailand faced Saudi Arabia, Bhutan and Cambodia in the ACC T20 Challenger Cup held in Bangkok early in the year and they will be confident after winning the international tournament recently held in Bhutan. They will also face three stronger teams in Asia in UAE ranked 16, Bahrain ranked 26 and Qatar ranked 28 so Thailand will be looking to improve their world ranking of 59.
Three matches are played each day at the West End Park International Cricket Stadium or the University Stadium in Doha in the space of 10 days from 19th November and Thailand face Qatar in the first match of the tournament on Tuesday.
Thailand will have six matches in 10 days and they will be able to improve their world ranking if they do well in the tournament. A place in the next T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February 2026 is a far-off dream for Thailand but the pathway is now clearly set out for all the teams in the tournament.
