These were the words of Nepal’s Buddhi Pradhan, one of Asia’s leading umpires, as he held a workshop for the officials who will be working at the ACC Trophy Challenge which starts on 7th December
If the umpires and scorers who attended the workshop take his words to heart this important tournament will be run successfully and Thailand’s officials will go from strength to strength as they work on future competitions, whether local or international.
A busy morning’s work centred on a discussion of the playing conditions for the tournament which are the essential basis for holding a well-run cricket tournament. Everyone who attended learned a great deal and all will benefit in the future as they asked questions and practised filling in the required paperwork
With three matches being played at the same time a total of nine umpires and six scorers are needed and members of the Thailand women’s cricket team, all qualified umpires in their own right, will be looking after the scoreboards. They also are involved in running junior tournaments, so these new skills will be used at grass roots level in the future.
Umpires and scorers work together closely during every game of cricket, so it is good that they could spend a morning studying together. The workshop concluded with a discussion of the techniques of paper and computer scoring which was led by Richard Lockwood, who had his chance to be involved in training courses after the ACC had held its first Scorer Educators Course in Nepal in September.
It is a very encouraging sign for the development of cricket across Asia that scorers as well as umpires are being provided with these opportunities to learn and to improve their skills. It is also to Thailand’s great credit that they are one of the first countries to hold a workshop like this.
It is now hoped that the ACC Trophy Challenge 2012 will be a great success
