The second day of the ACC U-16 Eastern Region Tournament being played in Bangkok and Chiang Mai was dominated by the bowlers as young batsmen from all the teams batting first struggled to build an innings. Nepal became the first team to make certain of reaching the semi-finals as they beat Hong Kong by four wickets at TCG to record their second win in Group A.
Hong Kong had been impressive with the bat on the first day as they made 253 for 4 against Myanmar but they found batting much more difficult against a superior Nepal bowling attack. Opening bowler Prattis GC claimed of 3 for 15 in his 7 overs but Ajay Kumar Lonya returned remarkable figures of 7 overs 5 maidens 2 wickets for 2 runs as Hong Kong were restricted to 82 for 9 in their 35 overs with Aryan Shetty top scoring with 24.
Nepal’s chase was not a comfortable one as they were reduced to 34 for 4 as Nasrulla Rana took 3 for 11 in his 7 overs but Trit Raj Das took his team to the brink of success with 27 and Nepal reached 84 for 6 in 24.1 overs to seal victory.
Nepal now have four points and they will be joined in the semi-finals from Group A by the winners of Thursday’s match between Thailand and Hong Kong. Thailand who lost to Nepal in their first match kept their hopes of progress alive by beating Myanmar by six wickets at AIT.
Myanmar were dismissed for 73 in 30.3 overs as Yodsak Saranonnakkun finished off the innings with a spell of 4 for 7 as the last five wickets fell for six runs. Thai opener Phiriyapong Suanchuai made 31 from 44 balls and Kongkidakon Rueangrotchanchai who had earlier taken two wickets saw his side home with an unbeaten 15. Thailand were well ahead of the required rate as they reached 74 for 4 in 13.3 overs.
Singapore are heading Group B with two wins out of two after they beat Bhutan by seven wickets at Royals. Bhutan were asked to bat first and made a determined effort to bat out their 35 overs as they made 66 for 9 with only 43 runs scored off the bat. Throngdrel Rabgyal made a marathon unbeaten 15 from 69 balls, while Aryan Berry recorded figures of 4 for 15 in his 7 overs. Singapore reached their target in just 10.1 overs as Ishaan Sawney and Pramesh Sanghavi shared a third wicket stand of 41 and Sawney saw his side home with an unbeaten 25.
Malaysia moved into second place in Group B after they held off a determined China team to win by four wickets at Prem. China were full of confidence following their win against Bhutan and they chose to bat first on winning the toss in the hope of batting out their 35 overs and posting a total they would be able to defend.
All was going to plan as opener Hao Wang held the innings together with 38 from 61 balls before he finally lost patience and was stumped by Mohammad Hakim off the bowling of Muhammad Aiman. Zhoyue Chen was then also stumped next ball Hakim made it three wickets in four balls as Liang Chen was caught in the off-side from his second ball. Hakim finished with four for 10 as China lost their last seven wickets for just 11 runs to be bowled out for 84 in 28.5 overs.
Malaysia started their innings before lunch and China had hopes of pulling off another victory as their enthusiastic fast bowler and captain Zihao Wang charged in and claimed three early wickets as Malaysia were under pressure on 32 for 3 from 8 overs at lunch.
Three more wickets fell after lunch with two run outs and Zihao Wang brought himself back for a final effort. Malaysia managed to secure victory by four wickets as they reached 88 for 6 from 18.4 overs with the winning runs coming from a streaky boundary through third man.
The final round of group matches is played on Thursday with the situation in Group A being straightforward as Nepal will go through to the semi-finals alongside the winner of the match between Thailand and Hong Kong.
Group B is not as clear cut but Singapore are well placed at the top of the table and will be sure to win the group if they beat China. Malaysia would be likely to go through if they beat Bhutan but it is not possible to completely rule out the spirited Chinese team who still have a chance of reaching the semi-finals if they can bring off a surprise by defeating Singapore.
