Bahrain were the last of the seven teams to start their campaigns in the World Cricket League Qualifier - Asia but they have quickly shown that they have a formidable batting line-up as they scored 362 for 4 in 50 overs against hosts Thailand. Janaka Chaturanga and Mohammad Sameer both hit centuries as Bahrain won their opening match of the competition by 138 runs.
Bahrain were impressive at Prem but it is Qatar who are the early pace-setters in the table as they gained their second win of the tournament by beating Bhutan by 214 runs at Gymkhana. Bhutan had done well to restrict Qatar’s batsmen to 280 for 8 but were dismissed for just 66 in 26.3 overs.
In the third match of the day Kuwait beat China by 293 runs on the Duckworth Lewis Method in a rain affected contest at Royals as they made 460 for 7 in their 50 overs and then bowled China out for 57 after a long break for rain.
Thailand went into their second match of the tournament in good spirits after beating Bhutan by 154 runs on the same ground yesterday. Bahrain won the toss and elected to bat first and they made excellent progress as they reached 107 for one after 20 overs. Bahrain opener Janaka Chaturanga was in good touch as he brought up his fifty from 68 balls with his third six.
The ball was soon sailing out of the ground at the David Buck Oval as Chaturanga launched a blistering attack against Thailand's off-spinners as he went from fifty to his hundred in just 18 more balls with six more sixes including four in an over bowled by Ryan Raina.
Thailand gained some respite when he was bowled by Noppon Senamontree for a blistering 110 from 91 balls as Bahrain lost their second wicket on 188 but Mohammad Sameer was there to see his team past 300 with five overs left. Sameer became the second Bahrain batsman to score a century as he reached the landmark in just 90 balls with 8 fours and 4 sixes.
Bahrain’s final total was an impressive 362 for 4 in 50 overs as Tahir Dar took 23 in an over from Noppon Senamontree but the spinner could still be pleased with his figures as he took three out of the four wickets to fall
Facing a formidable target Thailand made a positive start to their innings as they scored 40 for no wicket in the first five overs with Wanchana Uisuk continuing his great form with the bat. He was then bowled by Jabbar Sajjad for 38 from 34 balls and off-spinner Tahir Dar followed with the wickets of captain Daniel Jacobs and Shafiqul Haque.
With their target looking out of reach, Thailand could still look to build a useful score and Ryan Raina was looking in control as he has made his second successive fifty after making 68* against Bhutan. He reached his half-century from 65 balls with 3 fours and a six but once he fell for an accomplished 71 Thailand’s innings finished quickly as they were bowled out for 224 in 46.3 overs. Bahrain had won their first match of the tournament by 138 runs with Tahir Dar recording figures of 4 for 21.
At Gymkhana, Bhutan could be well pleased with their efforts in the field as they restricted Qatar to 280 for 8 in 50 overs. Qatar recovered well from 103 for 4 thanks to Tamoor Sajjad's 76 and his century partnership with Zaheer Ibrahim, while Suprit Pradhan finished with the best figures for Bhutan, claiming 3 for 54 in his 10 overs.
Bhutan soon found that batting was much more difficult as they slipped to 19 for 4 after 10 overs. Tall fast bowler Awais Malik was impressive as he took two wickets in his opening spell and then it was over to left-arm spinner Mohammad Nadeem who took three for 17 as Bhutan were bowled out for 66 in 26.3 overs to take Qatar to the top of the table after winning their first two matches..\
Kuwait had lost to Qatar in their first match of the tournament but had an outstanding morning against China as they finished on 460 for 7 from 50 overs at Royals. Openers Aamir Javed and Usman Waheed both made brilliant centuries as they shared a partnership of 239.
Aamir Javed reached his hundred in just 77 balls and although his innings ended on 144 from 91 balls with a remarkable 11 fours and 13 sixes, his opening partner Umar Waheed also completed his century as he made 110 from 100 balls with 5 fours and 9 sixes. The Chinese kept going against this onslaught and did well to collect seven wickets with Fu Yeng taking 3 for 67.
China were offered some relief by the weather as their innings was delayed by rain after just 2.2 overs but play resumed at Royals after a delay of more than an hour to give China a revised target of 351 in 36 overs as the DL Method came into play.
Kuwait completed an impressive victory as they dismissed China for 57 in 16.4 overs with slow left-arm bowler Haroon Shahid claiming the remarkable figures of 8 for 19. Ye Weiji made 25 and Ge Yongsheng was unbeaten on 11 as the margin between the two sides was reduced to 293 runs thanks to DLS.
What a day of action in the World Cricket League Qualifier – Asia in Chiang Mai as four batsmen made centuries and hit a multitude of sixes and fours. Play gets underway again on Tuesday as Bhutan take on China at Prem, Thailand face Qatar at Gymkhana and Bahrain play Saudi Arabia at Royals.
