CAT held its bi-annual development meeting this last Saturday (22nd August) at the Sports Authority of Thailand complex. The meeting was attended by 20 people with development officers from all the 7 different regions attending.
During the meeting all 7 provinces highlighted their achievements in terms of spreading cricket in their respective regions and suggested improvements as to how cricket uptake can be accelerated even further.
Khao-Yai responded very positively to the development of the Center of Excellence within the region and believe that with the new facility in place, it is only a matter of time before players from the region start representing Thailand.
Having recently hosted the ICC centenary cricket carnival cricket has left a lasting impact in the region and has opened immense scope for the further development of the sport. Petchabun reported that kids from over 8 schools have taken up cricket in the region. Cricket matches take place every weekend consisting of both soft and hard ball, depending on age of player and their level of commitment. Petchabun has been actively developing cricket by making modifications to their teaching strategy and by passing on their general know how of the game to the kids.
Phuket also reported positive growth in the number of boys and girls playing and learning cricket.
Chiang Mai reported that a new Nets facility will be developed at the Prince Royal School, and that cricket has been taken up by more new schools. It was also raised in the meeting the need for more coaches and assistants to be able to handle the growing number kids taking up the sport. With numbers growing, Chiang Mai is optimistic with regards to further development and envisions the establishment of a cricket center within the city. The kids in the region have shown great interest in the sport and dream of one day playing for the Thai national side.
Cricket in Chon-Buri was initiated and is currently governed from a cricket base established within the Burapha University. The region has witnessed a rise in interest by players.
This increased interest has primarily been fueled by the immense success of the Women’s side in the recent ACC Twenty20 tournament. With softball, volleyball and other sports being actively being played at Burapha, students and athletes are also now testing their skills in cricket. Cricket has only been recently introduced in the region and it seems that more girls within the university will be taking up cricket in the near future. Determination from women national players has been the key to development.
Khon Kaen, already an established source of talented cricket players has maintained a good standard of cricket. Similar to the other regions Khon Kaen has witnessed an increase in the number of potential cricketers to the extent that the region needs to build up its coaching and administration numbers in order to keep pace.Having already established itself as a regional force with their boys team Khoan Kaen has now also initiated the development of a girl’s side, with joint practice sessions being held on involving both genders.
The eighth and final region represented at the meeting was Bangkok. Development in Bangkok was deemed to be on course with CAT long term development plan. Bangkok representative Khun Kosol Yimpaiboon emphasized that for cricket to become a recognized force within Thailand, more local schools need to include cricket within their daily curriculum. With SAT supporting CAT’s development strategies, local regions have to register their boys and girls to gradually form regional, school and university teams for domestic competitions. Khun Kosol also emphasized the need to introduce a development program which would expand cricket to new regions. There are plans in place which will grant ethnic cricketer access to educational facilities and other benefits which will open up new doors for the boys and girls to achieve success not only in terms of a career in cricket but also life in general.
In conclusion it was felt that there is a need to accelerate the development of coaches and administration in order to instigate the growing numbers of kids taking up the sport. CAT would build upon its courses on coaching, umpiring, scoring and curators in all regions and potentially providing level 1 accreditation. It was also determined that the coaching body needs to concentrate on developing their English skills so that they can take part in ACC coaching courses. As such the English for Cricket program introduced this year will not only be continued but expanded. The 7 regions were also asked to focus on developing players who showed extra potential and genuine cricket skills, with the aim of taking these gifted and determined individuals to achieve their full potential. All in all this edition of CAT bi-annual development meeting was very constructive as it clearly defined the path which CAT needs to follow in order to continue developing cricket in Thailand.
