Myanmar and China played a very exciting match yesterday in the ACC Men’s Challenger Cup as the qualifier was completed with Myanmar winning by one wicket in the 20th over
Today we had the 9th place play-off between the same two teams and Myanmar again won the toss and asked China to bat first. We thought it should be another close contest between two evenly matched teams but China enjoyed their best ever day in the T20I format and won by 47 runs to finish in ninth place. China’s T20 record book was rewritten almost from A to Z.
China’s captain Wei Guolei started confidently with an early boundary and his team avoided losing wickets at the start of the innings. Myanmar bowled tidily with the new ball as China were 23 for 0 after the powerplay.
The Chinese openers were surviving but the total was only inching upwards against Myanmar’s seam bowlers. China’s captain hit his second four in the ninth over and 13 came from the over. China were giving a good batting display with 47 without losing a wicket in 10 overs.
China’s openers added 57 for the first wicket and Wei Guolei was able to accelerate with some powerful blows and reached his fifty from exactly 50 balls. 58 runs came from the last five overs but Myanmar kept going in the field with two direct hit run outs.
China reached 129 for 4 in their 20 overs as Wei Guolei hit 70 from 61 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes. China had made their highest total in T20Is and their captain had made China’s highest individual score on a great day for cricket in China.
Myanmar would have to bat superbly to achieve the chase of 130 in 20 overs and Ko Ko Lin Tu was bowled for 7 with the score on 11. Paing Danu hit a six as Myanmar were 26 for 1 after six overs. Myanmar lost their second wicket with the total on 38 after 10 overs and needed 92 more to win in the second half of their innings.
With a good display in the field, China beat Myanmar by 47 runs as they restricted them to 82 for 9. It was China’s best win in T20Is and to complete a wonderful day for China Ma Qiangcheng recorded their best T20 figures as he took five wickets for nine runs. At least Myanmar were able to bat out 20 overs and make their highest T20 total. Wei Guolei was named player of the match for his record breaking innings of 70 on a historic day for China.
