Thailand’s women cricket team took another big step forward on their journey #fightforgold in the SEA Games in Malaysia next month as they finished second in the four-team tournament held as a warm-up competition for the SEA Games. Most importantly they twice convincingly beat hosts Malaysia who are considered major rivals in the SEA Games women’s cricket event.

The Thai girls had already defeated Malaysia by 10 wickets earlier in the week and they were looking to maintain their superiority over their rivals for the gold medal next month. Six of the top seven in the batting order reached double figures without going on but this was enough for a total of 112 for 6 in 20 overs.

Malaysia’s innings never really got going after Chanida Sutthiruang again bowled well with the new ball and took a wicket in her first over. Seven bowlers turned their arms over and the fielding was sharp as Thailand gained four run outs as Malaysia could manage only 53 for 7 in their innings.

Thailand won by 59 runs to finish second in the table on 9 points with four wins, 1 tie and only 1 defeat just behind Sri Lanka Army who won the Quadrangular with 11 points. Malaysia and Tanzania won one match apiece, but Thailand will look back on their second match against Sri Lanka Army with regret as they failed to overcome a score of 44.

Had they chased down a seemingly simple target instead of equaling it, Thailand could have now been celebrating victory in this tournament. The team will be hoping they can go one better in the SEA Games next month.
